Yesterday was the Families On The Green Fete. Preparations for my art stall had been going on for weeks, so when the weather forecast kept saying some rain you can imagine that I was not impressed!
The day dawned a little wet, however was quite clear by the time 8am rolled around. So we proceeded to set up and realised our major issue was not going to be rain, rather we would be battling the wind. Luckily for us, the organisers had also realised wind was going to be an issue and had plenty of star pickets for the marquees to be attached to. There were several times throughout the day that we thought the marquee was going to fly away regardless of it being semi anchored down, but luckily it stayed put reasonably well.
The heavy winds did mean that I wasn't able to set up my stall in the way I wanted to, and we spent the entire day securing things and picking them back up when a particularly strong gust would inevitably blow things over! But I think we did a pretty decent job of setting up despite those issues and received a lot of positive feedback from the public so I can't really complain too much!
You can see my eldest daughter, well her arms anyway! She's holding the bigger paintings in place on their easels and did a great job making sure they didn't fall over.
At about 1:30pm, the black clouds rolled in and a heavy downpour ensued. You've never seen us move so quickly to cover the table with plastic while at the same time trying to move the paintings and protect the baby from the rain as well! But the rain thankfully only lasted about 10 minutes and then it was just a matter of a little tidy up!
We were able to rearrange and get more things out as others sold during the course of the day, so it really ended up being not too much of a problem in the end. It was also a great opportunity to get some more enrolments for next terms' lessons and workshops.
Of course, true to form the weather cleared right up once we were packing things away and the late afternoon was lovely, sunny and still. But that's ok, perhaps the day would have proven boring if we didn't have the wind to argue with. ;)
