A Work In Progress (or...what you can achieve while your baby naps!)

Last night while browsing Pinterest I was struck hard by inspiration. I felt the need to paint, and I wanted to do it now! But seeing that it was quite late, all my art materials were out in my studio in the backyard, and it was dark, and I have a baby that would be up for her night time bottle soon, and I have other children to get up and take to school in the morning, I decided to wait!

So this morning after taking the bigger ones to school, and giving the little Miss her morning bottle, I gathered my supplies from the artshed, (dropping my bucket of paintbrushes because I was carrying WAY too much stuff all at once!) and set up in the kitchen.

I then put little Miss to bed and the lovely girl she is, she slept for quite a decent amount of time and I was able to really get my hands dirty and scratch that need to paint itch! I really did get my hands dirty as well, because I used my hands instead of a paintbrush!

So my work in progress started out as this:

Well...not quite - there was no white originally but I forgot to take a photo!
So I had always liked this painting that I did a few years ago now. But I wanted it to have more movement so I set to work with gesso and painted big white circles around the world. Then I got ink and gouache and acrylic paint and poured it on! I poured it on my hands and onto the canvas. And I used my hands to spread it around. Honestly, it felt great to be so hands on.  Just touching and spreading the paint and ink was so tactile and organic, I sort of got lost in it.

Then the baby woke up - so I had to wash it all off my hands and go give her a cuddle and she went right back to sleep!

So back to it. I also used Atelier's Interactive medium to help everything flow. Some of my paints are Atelier, some are Matisse, the gouache and inks are Art Spectrum, so the medium technically is not meant for all of them. But as with most great discoveries, I discovered a while back that the Interactive Medium is fantastic with all sorts of stuff and I use it in most of my paintings.

And so this is what I ended up with:

Much more organic and flowing

I have titled it 'World Revisited' because that's exactly what it is. All that's left is to varnish and paint the edges. I'm going to paint the edges blue black all around, and once it's all dry, Liquetex over the entire thing. I usually do at least a couple of coats, I think I'll go for 3 on this painting. It will give it a nice subtle gloss without being overbearing.

I'd love to hear what you think of it!
