Featured Artist Series: Josh McCrimmon

Today's feature artist is someone just a little bit different! I hadn't seen Josh McCrimmon's work before and Teresa (from the last feature) suggested I look him up. And am I ever glad I did! His work is so fun and full of life, l just love it!

Josh has been a studio holder with the Maribyrnong River Edge Artists Movement, and is an associate member of the Australian Cartoonists Association. His work definitely has a street art feel and he himself says that Melbourne Street Art is one of his major influences.

Josh has had work published in magazines and newsletters, and has been actively exhibiting over the last few years or so. He and I were actually part of the same exhibition at one point. The first Red Rock Regional Art Gallery Group exhibition in Coroorooke in Victoria in 2012. He has also won several awards for his art over the last couple of years.

His work has a gorgeous undefinable quality to it: it's kind of raw, almost whimsical, very illustrative and it really speaks to you. Well....it does to me anyway!  He says that he thinks art is at its best when it is "raw, local and embedded in grassroots". I think he's got those qualities down perfectly within his work.

Falling

Josh can be found at his very awesomely titled website, Supermarket Monkey. I just love the above work, Falling. I think it describes the chaos that you can feel when everything is just overwhelming you and it feels like it's all coming down on top of you. What about you? Which work do you like best, and what does it say to you?

Featured Artist Series; Teresa Lawrence

I'm running a little late with this weeks' featured artist: blame it on a killer sinus infection. But better late than never right?

This weeks' artist is a lady who has taught me a lot. She was my printmaking instructor and is an accomplished artist in both printmaking and painting, as well as being a children's book author and illustrator! My 6 month old daughter just loves her Baby Face books, which you can see here.

On to her artwork now:

Tread Carefully, Etching and Collage, 2013

Teresa began her career as a copywriter in advertising, however wanted something more so ventured into the world of illustration. She spent many years working as a freelance illustrator, accumulating a portfolio of almost 100 books! In between illustrating she gained more degrees and now focuses on teaching:

"These days I still do some illustration work but I have ventured out into the worlds of painting and printmaking which I find very fulfilling. I also teach art, or rather facilitate it, which I love to do. Seeing others discover something within themselves is quite a privilege.
In addition to teaching I also have a studio where I do my painting. My printmaking happens in the studios of others mostly."

I must admit I love Teresa's printing style. Her work is whimsical, delicate and quite lovely.

In addition to printing and illustration, Teresa also paints. Her painting style is gorgeous, with an almost haunting quality to her images.

Beeac Paddock, Oil on Canvas, 2010. Now residing in the apartment of it's new owner in Manhattan, New York.

The Highway, Oil on Canvas 2013

I love the above work, The Highway. It's one of a series of landscapes Teresa is currently working on and is yet to be exhibited. To me it almost looks like the opening scene from one of those fantastic suspenseful mystery movies....the ones that have you holding a pillow in front of your face because you can't watch from fear, but you can't look away at the same time! A bit Alfred Hitchcock-ish. Or maybe that's just me.....

Teresa is available for workshops and her work is for sale. She can be contacted through her website or through email here. She's also on Instagram, so why not follow her? @teresalawrence123
As always....what's your favourite piece and why?

I'm still on the lookout for some more artists for my Featured Artist series. If you think you'd like to be featured here, please use my contact page to send me an email, and be sure to sign up to my monthly newsletter!

Featured Artist Series; Stephen Whatcott

I'm excited to be recommencing my Featured Artist Series after the Christmas break! First artist up for the New Year is a UK based artist who works in a very unique illustrative style.

Stephen has been drawing his whole life and it certainly shows in his paintings. His skill with proportion, scale and tone is clearly evident and all combine to create a modern take on the more traditional types of portrait drawings.

Alex Reading Acrylic and Pastel on Canvas, 112 x 56cms. £585

A Roar And Then Silence, Acrylic and Pastel on Canvas, 110 x 110cms  £805

Stephens' technique of using acrylic paint and pastels on canvas give 'ordinary' pictures a touch of the extra-ordinary. The images become something you want to keep looking at; they're like a drawing but a painting at the same time. Kind of illustrative, but not in the whimsical illustration style that you would normally think of when you hear 'illustration'. I really enjoy his work. To me, his paintings are the perfect combination of a traditional painting or drawing but with elements that wouldn't be out of place in the most modern home.

Just You and Me, Honey 70 x 120cms, Acrylic and Pastel on Canvas, £700

Right By Your Side Is Home, Acrylic and Pastel on Canvas, 112 x 66cms  £650

Of his working style, Stephen says he is usually 'head down, with a handful of pencils'. He is a full time artist, in his words: "currently riding out the storm in the same area where I grew up. Although, I don't get to play army games in the woods anymore." I get the feeling that he quite enjoys his job!

The Pontiac, Acrylic and Pastel on Canvas, 120 x 90cms, £785

The Woods, Acrylic and Pastel on Canvas, 137 x 76cms, £770

If you would like more information about Stephen's work, he can be contacted through his WEBSITE, you can connect with him via Facebook or Twitter. My favourite is the above work; The Woods. I love the simplicity of it, and I really love the composition. How about you, which would you say you like the most?

Featured Artist Series: Tina Coxall

This weeks' feature artist is such an amazing person so I'm very excited to be able to showcase her work here.  Tina Coxall is a Victorian based artist who is currently studying to add another art degree  to the two she already has!

She is one of eleven resident artists at Geelongs' Etch Gallery and Studios, and participates in regular exhibitions.  Her work is absolutely full of life; I love the colours she uses. They are so indicative of the colour within our Australian landscapes.

Barwon River Geelong, Oil on Canvas, 92 x 62cm $350

Corio Bay, 92 x 62cms Oil on Canvas $350

Of her art, Tina says " Much of my inspiration is drawn from my love of the Australian bush, landscapes and native fauna including well known artists Sydney Nolan ,John Olsen, Fred Williams and local Geelong artist, Patsy Bush. With years of working as a Nurse, the art of creation and experimentation provides time out to reflect and relax, helping me escape the hustle and bustle of our raging fast forward world. Perhaps a solicitous haven to retreat to at times of angst."

Murray River 1, 160 x 68cms oil and mixed media (framed) $950

Murray River/Hattah, 100 x 75cms oil and mixed media $300

Tina often utilises aerial photographs of her favourite destinations in a contemporary yet playful way creating stunning, often abstracted works of art.

Wentworth River, 60 x 50cms oil and mixed media $150

You Yangs 2, 80 x 60cms oil on canvas $250

You Yangs, 92 x 62cms oil $350
Tina can be contacted via THIS LINK for email inquiries about her work including commissions.  She can be found working in the Etch studios drawing, printmaking, painting and working on commission pieces.  CLICK HERE to be taken to Etch Studios page, with contact details and info about their current exhibition which features Tina's work along with the work of 19 other amazing Geelong artists.

I will be taking a few weeks' break from the Featured Artist Series for Christmas, but I'll be back with more artists to showcase in early January! I will of course have other posts for you to read in the meantime.

Featured Artist Series; David Munroe

This weeks' feature artist looks at some very abstract work by Scottish artist, David Munroe.

Equinox (Meteorology Series)
Mixed Media on Box Canvas 36 x 24 inches
£200.00

David's work utilises mixed media to keep his focus heavily on movement, fluidity and colour.  He explores our environment through different eyes and this is reflected in the vibrancy of his work. His Meteorology series looks at the colour and patterns created with infrared satellite images of extreme weather across the globe. The results are beautiful and intriguing. The blending of colour into itself is visually quite stunning, and the flow of paint and other mediums gives the work constant movement; it seems as if the paint may still be flowing across the canvas.

Vortex (Meteorology Series)
Mixed Media on Box Canvas 23 x 24 inches
£90.00

While his Liquid and Meteorology series look at patterns within our environment, his Industrial series looks at the effect of weather and nature on man made surfaces. This creates artworks with raw, textural beauty. Of his work, David has said he takes most of his inspiration from nature, and uses colour, texture and different elements to create work that is organic, fluid and beautiful. He is enjoying using heat and cold to alter the drying times and flow of the materials within his work and seeing the results this produces.

Submergence (Liquid Series)
Mixed Media on Box Canvas 16 x 24 inches
£99.99

Aqua1 and Aqua2 (Liquid Series)
Mixed Media on Double Box Canvas 20 x 20 inches
£99.99

Sandstorm (Meteorology Series)
Mixed Media on Box Canvas 23 x 24 inches
£90.00

You can see more of David's work on his website; he ships free within the UK and will happily supply a quote for international shipping of any of his amazing paintings. To connect with him on Twitter click here or you can LIKE his Facebook page to keep up to date with offers! He currently has a 30% off sale through his website until December 31st, so go check it out now!

Personally I love Equinox, with Submergence coming a very very close second! Which is your favourite? (And don't you just want to reach out and touch their surfaces?! Or is that just me being weird? )

Featured Artist Series: Peter Dawson

I'm  excited to be bring you my featured artist series. I am so looking forward to showcasing some wonderful talent!

First in my series is an artist I admire greatly, not just within his work but as a person as well. Peter Dawson is a Victorian based artist who works in a photo realism style. Both his drawings and paintings reflect this style, with the finest details being rendered in such a realistic manner that it becomes difficult to ascertain that the image you are seeing is in fact not a photograph.

"Christine Dreams Brent" (tribute to Brent Wong) 2013
370mm x 540mm - graphite on watercolour paper

"In a Quiet Way" 2011
Graphite on watercolour paper

Peter has said about his drawing technique that it comes from his early working experimentation with traditional printmaking techniques such as lithography and engraving. I am in complete awe of his ability and patience and the end result of his drawings and paintings. (1)

"Let Go" (for Maurice) 2011
370mm x 540mm - graphite on watercolour paper

About the above work 'Let Go' he has said "[It] ... is about loss, grief and letting go of the sadness experienced with bereavement. It incorporates cultural symbols of death, including Arum Lilies (my mother always called them ‘death flowers’ and shaving the head as a mourning ritual, set against an evening sky. It is an image of quiet reflection on the loss of a loved one; and of the need for ‘setting free’ both oneself and the departed." (2)

"Magic or Mischief" 2013
375mm x 540mm - graphite on watercolour paper

"Tears For Fukushima" 2012
100cm x 100cm - acrylic on canvas
"The Machine Demands a Sacrifice" 2013
100cm x 100cm - oil on canvas

"The Black Hat"
graphite on watercolour paper

I think the above work, 'The Black Hat' is my favourite. I love that you can see the texture of the paper, and I love the playfulness of the image itself. And of course it's not really a secret that I love tulle; it has to be my favourite fabric in the history of ever. So to see that immaculately rendered tulle flaring out from the bustle of that dress, well....how could it not strike me immediately?

I met Peter last year while I was studying for my Dip. in Visual Arts. He was my drawing and Photoshop instructor, and I could not have asked for a better one! Not only is his work completely amazing, he has infinite patience and has a knack of enabling those of us that are not so technically minded to understand what we are supposed to be doing! It goes without saying that he is an allround nice guy as well!

If you would like to learn more about Peter's work, you can like his Facebook Page, or you can visit his Website. I'd love to hear what you think of Peter's work; leave me a comment telling me which piece is your favourite.

I'm a little excited about next week's featured artist. I'll be looking at the work of Scottish artist David Monroe, whose work is very abstract and fluid, and full of colour. Stay tuned!
